Bitterroot National Forest Fisheries Biologist Mike Jakober will be the speaker for the January 19 Bitterroot Trout Unlimited Meeting. The title of Mike’s talk is " Fish and Fires - you can burn us but we'll be back!”

The impact of fires on fisheries and streams is said to be horrendous. Guess what? It ain’t so! Come hear Forest Service Fisheries Biologist Mike Jakober dispel the rumors and explain the real effect that fires have had on our streams and fisheries. Our 2011 fisheries intern, Billy Brann, will also be on hand to talk about his summer project.

And, don’t forget! We will be having dinner with Pat at Spice ofLife at 5:00 pm before the meeting. Long-time TU supporter KarenSuennen will be donating 10% of the proceeds to our club. So comejoin us for dinner.

2012 Bitterroot Bugger Classes, fly tying, casting and more

FREE fly tying and fly fishing classes in Hamilton, Montana!

Do you know kids who would like to learn how to fly fish? How about fly tying? How about learning about bugs and fish identification? Classes are sponsored by Bitterroot Trout Unlimited and the Keystone Discovery Enrichment Program. Join them for the 12thannual Bitterroot Buggers learning sessions which are open to any child in the Bitterroot Valley ages 8 through 14.

The program will provide small groupinstruction and all the materials. In addition to the beginnerclass, an advanced class is offered for students who wouldlike to learn more advanced fly patterns.

The group can be as many as 50 children so help is welcome. If you are interested in volunteering to help teach fly tying, or supervise and interact with the students, distribute materials, etc., please call the Westview Center or Greg Chester.

What is expected of students?
The success of the program depends on the continued support of volunteer instructors. Because of this, participants are expected to arrive each week ready to learn and enjoy themselves with attitudes that are respectful of everyone involved. Every child is expected to help with cleanup and treat the materials and equipment with respect. If a student’s behavior is disruptive to the program or dangerous to themselves, volunteers or other students, parents will be notified immediately, asked to pick their child up and the student will be dismissed from the program. The program attendance is large and to be fair to all participants, general rules must be followed.

What is expected of families?
Because the staffed is volunteer, it is essential that children be at the class promptly but not before 6:30 pm. They must be picked up by 8:00 pm. No supervision is provided beyond the program time. For the safety of the children, the staff must be notified in advance if a child will be walking home or someone other than those listed on the registration will be picking them up. Parents are welcome to be in class and participate but are expected to assist the child in following the directions given by the instructors. Everyone has different methods and techniques used in tying but the curriculum has been carefully developed to allow for a continuity of techniques.

Be sure and take a moment to thank the volunteer instructors. They generously give up their evenings to prepare for and work with this program.

The Ravalli Commissioners are having a meeting at 1:30 pm Tuesday, December 13 to discuss amending the floodplain regulations. Eric Anderson, Ravalli County Floodplain Manager, has been working with Dan Browder, Deputy County Attorney at Ravalli County Attorney Office, to codify the regulations along with all the other County regulations. Codifying basically means putting all the individual regulations into one large code of ordinances instead of separate stand alone documents.

The floodplain regulations will be fully open to modification during this codification process. Anderson and Browder have been doing minor modifications to the regulations for the past few weeks, primarily to correct errors and to make the regulations more consistent with State and Federal law. At this point, no changes are seriously substantial, however, one is never 100% sure what’s going to happen during the meeting on Tuesday. It’s possible that the meeting might get a large turn out of people who would like more substantial changes to the regulations, possibly with less protection for the river. Attend the meeting if you would like to track the progress or make comment.

The meeting is scheduled for 1.5 hours and will likely be continued to another day for further discussion. The Commissioner decision is NOT scheduled to be made on Tuesday. It is simply the beginning of the process to open up discussion with the Commissioners. Anderson and Browder will be explaining all the changes they have made, point by point, to the Commissioners

It appears that the entire process is open to written public comment at any time.

October 20 for the BRTU general meeting, Become an Outdoor Woman

Did you get this postcard in the mail? You should have. Please join us October 20 for the BRTU general meeting.

The meeting will feature Liz Lodman presenting a talk on “How to Lure Women Outdoors- Montana’s Becoming an Outdoor Woman Program. The meeting will start at 7:00 pm at the Hamilton Elks Lodge, 203 State St in Hamilton. The meeting is open to the public and there is no charge for admission.

Becoming an Outdoor Woman (BOW) is a nationwide program and the one that Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks operates is known as one of the best in country. According to the MFWP BOW website (http://fwp.mt.gov/education/bow/default.html), “Montana's Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program has been providing women the opportunity to learn outdoor skills since 1994. BOW helps break down barriers that might prevent women from fishing, hunting, or pursuing other outdoor activities.” BOW holds workshops around the state to encourage women of all ages to learn about and to participate in fishing, hunting, canoeing, etc.

Liz Lodman manages BOW for the state of Montana and will present a great overview of the program with a special emphasis on fishing. Plan to attend and to encourage your friends to come learn about this program.

5th Annual Bryant/Herzer Memorial Float

Friday, August 5 is the date of a benefit fishing float to raise funds for Montana TU’s conservation work and to honor the memory of Moe Herzer and Steve Bryant.

This is the fifth float honoring Moe and Steve. Both men were extraordinary fishermen and passionate about coldwater conservation.

Blackfoot River Outfitters will donate 100% of the proceeds. Their full day professional guided floats include lunch, bevvies and a scrumptious BBQ at Council Groves State Park in Missoula. Their guides will pick the best western Montana stream available on August 5th. Please book your reservation early: Donations of $475 per boat or $238 per seat will help Montana TU conserve, protect & restore the watersheds Steve and Moe loved.

Public input sought for Montana fishing regulations - Hamilton meeting is June 8

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks review statewide fishing regulations and proposal changes every four years and offers public discussion forums.

The 2011 MT FWP review public meeting in Hamilton, Montana is:

Date: Wednesday, June 8
Time: 7:00 pm
Where: Bitterroot National Forest Supervisor's Office, 1801 North 1st, Hamilton, MT 406-363-7100. Park behind the building and enter through the back door.

There are a number of proposals statewide. Some of the proposals could potentially affect the fishing regulations in the Bitterroot. Specifically, the two proposals that anglers in the Bitterroot might be interested in are:

1. Increasing harvest on expanding brown trout populations in areas such as Rock Creek (near Clinton), Bitterroot River and Clark Fork River drainages. and

2. Simplify the regulations throughout the Region by reducing the number and variety of harvest regulation exceptions, particularly within the Bitterroot drainage and between rivers.

Montana Fish Wildife and Parks will present information and accept comments from the public.

The public comments will be considered when recommendations are placed on the statewide list of tentative proposals. The tentative list will be available this summer and additional comments accepted at that time. Eventually, the Montana Fish and Game Commission will make final decisions in October 2011.

(Hamilton, Mont., Mar 17) March 2011 is a good month for winter recreation and for Bitterroot Trout Unlimited (BRTU) to recognize and thank three exceptional supporting businesses. The BRTU chapter is very fortunate to have many establishments in the area that are good supporters and reliable contributors to TU’s conservation and education efforts. The local TU Chapter encourages visitors and residents to patronize these places to eat and drink as you recreate around the Bitterroot Valley. These recommendations don’t come lightly. Nicol and Tim Bozik are the daughter-father team owning and running Bitter Root Brewing. In addition to sponsoring the BRTU banquet and providing the best microbrews in the valley, the Brewery also hosts a fly-tying roundtable every Wednesday evening. According to Greg Chester, the fun and tying starts about 5:30 P.M. Prominent tiers from around the valley periodically show up, flaunt their abilities, and provide entertainment and fishing fables. If you want to pick up some tips from the best, stop by, grab an IPA and check it out. Rumor has it that even local living legend John Foust occasionally shows up. The food is superior pub fare, too. Al Mitchell, owner of the Paper Clip in Hamilton, has opened a full-service bar in the old Banque Club and Bar on Hamilton’s Main Street. Paper Clip has been a donor to BRTU since the late 1970’s when Cherie and Dale Linduska opened it; Carol and Al continue this tradition. If you are still thirsty for a drink and some conversation after the Brewery closes at 8:00 pm, head on over to the Banque. It is an historic building worth spending time in.

Karen Suennen and the crew at Spice of Life are also long-time supporters of BRTU. In fact, Spice catered the banquets for a number of years before BRTU moved the event out to the Bitterroot River Inn. Karen recently added Tapas based on her regular menu between 5:30 and 6:30 on Wednesdays through Saturdays. In case you don’t know, tapas are “small plates” of delectables designed to whet the appetite and stimulate conversation over a glass of wine or a beer, perfect before a larger meal or before heading home to dinner. Fishing the Bitterroot River with a living legend, John Foust speaks to BRTU

Anders Halverson provides an in-depth account of the rainbow trout and why it has become the most commonly stocked and controversial freshwater fish in the United States. Rainbow trout have been proudly dubbed “an entirely synthetic fish” by fisheries managers. According to Halverson, his book examines the paradoxes and reveals a range of characters, from nineteenth-century boosters who believed rainbows could be the saviors of democracy to twenty-first-century biologists who now seek to eradicate them from waters around the globe. He discusses how the story of the rainbow trout is the story of our relationship with the natural world—how it has changed and how it startlingly has not.

Anders Halverson is an award winning journalist with a Ph.D. in aquatic ecology from Yale University. With support from the National Science Foundation, he wrote this book as a research associate at the University of Colorado’s Center of the American West.
A lifelong fisherman, he currently lives in Boulder, CO.

The answer: worms. Candy Craig got it right, and she's the winner of a copy of the book. The reason the fisheries officials put the fish on a worm diet was to prepare them for the wild. They feared the fish would swim around looking for pellets when they were released, which is their normal fare in the hatchery.

The January Bitterroot Trout Unlimited Meeting will be Thursday, January 20, 2011, 7:00 PM at the Hamilton Elks Lodge, 203 State St.

The speaker will be Wade Fredenberg, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Kalispell, MT

The title of Wade’s talk is: "Bad Boys and Bull Trout - Sordid Tales of Montana Men Who Fished For Bull Trout and the Dollies Who Loved Them."

The Bull Trout is one of Montana’s native trout. Native Americans once fished for enormous bull trout all up and down the Bitterroot, but big bruisers are rare now in the main stem of the river. Wade Fredenberg coordinates bull trout programs for the US Fish and Wildlife Service. He is going to give an incredibly interesting and entertaining historical account of these special fish and describe their prospects for the 21st century .

And, don’t forget! We will be having dinner with Wade at Spice of Life at 5:00 pm before the meeting. Long-time TU supporter Karen Suennen will have a special tapas menu for us and will be donating 10% of the proceeds to our club. So come on down, have a beer and a bite to eat and meet Wade.

The meeting and the dinner are open to the public and you need not be a TU member to attend.

Bitterroot Trout Unlimited presents Grant Grisak who will talk about “The Smith River: fabled icon of Montana streams and fishing.” Grant is Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Fisheries Biologist from the Great Falls, Montana office.

Lewis and Clark explored the Smith River as they ascended the Missouri River in the summer of 1805. Today, the Smith is one of the most notable rivers. It boasts spectacular scenery and a productive trout fishery, but the unique aspect is the limited access. It has only one public put-in and one public take-out for a 59-mile stretch of the river. If you put-in, pack and plan for at least a four day float to the take-out. This is a permitted floating stretch and permits are allocated to the public through a lottery system prior to the spring season. Check online at Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MFWP) Smith River permit page for instructions and information. The process usually begins in January and has a mid-February application deadline.

Greg Grisak is the MFWP manager of the Smith River. Plan to attend this program to learn more about this special river and how MFWP works to protect its special character.

David Schmeterling, FWP biologist, will talk about the fishery effects of Milltown Dam Removal.

By removing the old dams at Milltown and Bonner, Montana, the river system and junction that Lewis and Clark saw will be recreated. On July 4, 1806, Merriwether Lewis described this river in his journal and now 100 years later, it is as he first saw it. The Blackfoot and Clark Fork come together in a confluence without a dam and reservoir. Fish from the lower Clark Fork can swim up the Blackfoot, the Clark Fork, to Rock Creek and beyond in their natural state.

Dave Schmetterling has been and is tracking the impacts. He is learning about effects on bull trout, cutthroat and other fish. He will be sharing with the public what this incredible project is doing for our native fish!

2010 Banquet review and photos

September 24, 2010 was the 31st annual Bitterroot Trout Unlimited Banquet. Bitterroot Trout Unlimited (BRTU) is one of the most respected groups in the Bitterroot Valley. They are proud of their status and the accomplishments the chapter has made in collaboration with the private and public sector. BRTU is “working today for the trout of tomorrow.”

The banquet theme this year was “Working together for conservation” and the fundraising event was a smashing success. The delicious organic dinner was catered by Riversong Gourmet and the beverage service was provided by Silver Coin Casino. As usual, local brews were available featuring Bitter Root Brewing Company. One will want to put this event on the September 2011 calendar. Check www.brtu.org for the date. It will be posted early in 2011.

Proceeds of the banquet and the sponsor program support the BRTU Education and Stewardship efforts, and, unlike other sponsor programs, the money will stay local and is not used for salaries!

Two new projects are being launched this year. They are in addition to all the conservation and education projects they have done for many years.
New project #1: support of a fisheries intern to work on native trout projects with the U.S. Forest Service fisheries staff.

New project #2: the underwriting of a fish biology class at Corvallis High School. This class will include the acclaimed “Trout in the Classroom” program.

Donegal TU Chapter - Stocking the Lititz Run in Pennsylvania on May 11

The Donegal Chapter of Trout Unlimited (DTU) has a few connections with Bitterroot Trout Unlimited. I stay in close touch with DTU member and our friend, Jim Wellendorf and DTU Volunteer Coordinator, Faye Haering who has family in Bigfork, has attended BRTU banquets and fished the Bitterroot on a trip donated by Dick Galli. Jim has also fished the Bitterroot with Jack Mauer.

The restoration is being designed by the PA Fish and Boat Commission and the plan will be finalized shortly to restore some of the area located above where the old dam was removed almost 10 years ago. This stocking project is part of the restoration of Lititz Run. Thanks Jim and Faye for sharing this with us.

Spring time on the Bitterroot is always an exciting time of the year. We start with the long awaited Skwala activity after winter and then are treated to Baetis, March Browns and Gray Drakes as spring sets in. We’re fortunate in the Bitterroot to have such a diverse bug population and even more privileged to have such terrific hatches to fill the gap between Skwala’s and the summer bugs.

This unique pattern has worked well for me over the years and effectively imitates any mayfly adult by simply changing color and size. It’s tied in the style of Rich Christian’s GT Dun series that replicates both adult and emergent stages. This is made possible with the Gamakatsu C12U curved shank hook and unique tail placement. When fishing this bug keep floatant off of the abdomen and shuck – this is important to insure the emergent stage is replicated properly.

BRTU Grant Application Process for projects benefiting wild fish and habitat

Any entity with a good on-the-ground project that benefits wild fish and their habitat can apply for funding through the Bitterroot Trout Unlimited (BRTU) Fisheries Improvement Program. You are strongly urged to contact your local fisheries biologist prior to submitting an application. The local biologist typically knows the limiting factors associated with fish populations in their management area.

Applications must be completed in full, and must include detailed budget information as provided on the Budget Template.

April 15 BRTU Meeting

Don’t forget that legendary rod maker “Boo Boy” Glenn Brackett from Sweetgrass Rods will be presenting the April 15 BRTU program at 7:00 pm at the Hamilton Elks Club.

Glenn says that anyone that has a special bamboo rod they own or have made should bring it down and he will take a gander at it. This is a chance to learn from a bona fide master.

Also, Glenn will be bringing tickets for chances on a Sweetgrass Rod raffle that the Lewis and Clark TU chapter is raffling off as a fund raiser. This 3-piece, 2 tip, 7'9" 4/5 weight bamboo rod is being built specifically for LCTU chapter by the booboys!

They will sell no more than 300 tickets for this $2500-valued rod with the drawing to be held at the LCTU fundraising event on October 2, 2010.

Ticket prices are $20 for 1 ticket, $100 for 6 tickets, or $300 for 20 tickets. You won’t want to miss out!!!! So, bring a check made out to Lewis and Clark Trout Unlimited.

Fly Fishing 101 at Hamilton High School

Volunteer opportunity!

Fly Fishers of the Bitterroot (FFB) and BRTU are working with staff at Hamilton High School to put on “Fly Fishing 101” for the senior PE class students. Cliff Gibbons from FFB is leading the effort, and Chris Clancy, Eddie Olwell and Jeff Gary are among the instructors. However, additional volunteers are needed to assist with the classes.

Mark you calendar! The classes will be on April 15, 19, 23, 27 and 29. Morning sessions will be from 9:55am to 11:25am & afternoon sessions from 12:38pm to 2:08 pm.

It is spring in Montana and many people are getting outside to enjoy the sun and warmer weather. A popular place to be in the Bitterroot is the river.

When are fishing, floating, canoeing, or on a family outing on the river, one will see a variety of stream bank stabilization (rip-rap) projects. You might even see a bulldozer working on the bank or in the river.

These projects will cause major disturbance to soils and vegetation and turbidity or “clouding” of the water. This article will provide resources for information about the permitting and administration process for the projects/activities. In listening to comments from the public, some are interested, some are concerned. The public is asking questions and needs to know where to find answers.

On Sunday, March 21, six interested Trout Unlimited (TU) members floated a stretch of the middle Bitterroot River. In this group was the Montana TU Executive Director, Montana TU Council Chairman, three fly fishing outfitters and guides and a Bitterroot Conservation District (BCD) Supervisor. I had the privilege of accompanying them. The day began with a clear sky, but soon a wind picked up. Some clouds rolled in and the air temperature dropped. As one might guess, with three boats fairly close together and much to talk about; the fishing was reasonable but not great. That didn’t matter; fishing was an important objective but not the only one. This group was also floating in order to view and discuss several bank stabilization projects in a middle section of the river.

The river is considered a free-stone stream with many banks composed of highly erosive glacial till that will change with EVERY high water event. What naturally holds these banks together is the willow, dogwood, cottonwood and other riparian plants and root systems. We can try to stabilize a bank with harder material, but including plenty of natural vegetation and woody debris is most appealing to the trout. The dilemma is how to protect houses built on the river while maintaining healthy trout habitat which includes clean, clear water.

Part One of this article shares photos and talks about some projects the group viewed.

Part Two provides basic information about what projects need to be permitted and from whom, and has links to sites with more detailed information about the laws and the agencies that administer them.

Part Three shares comments and questions from public and the group that floated March 21.

Part Four shares a tool that allows the public to lodge a complaint against a project or activity and talks about other forums and ways to weigh in on the process.

December 2009 news from Bitterroot Trout Unlimited

BRTU wishes everyone a Happy Holiday season.

It is probably a bit chilly today for even the most dedicated anglers to be out plying the waters. Plus the blanket of ice and slush complicate that perfect drift with the large stonefly nymph, assuming you have one of the new Polar winter rods with heated guides.

There is no TU meeting this month, but here are a couple of items that might be of interest.

• Notice of spring Fly-Casting Institute at Marcus Daly Hospital. The October presentation by Dr Tim McCue “Casting Healthy” drew one of the largest crowds we have ever had. A number of members expressed interest in learning when the next clinic would be.

See the flyer (on the left) for information about a session scheduled for next April. Certainly, as our shoulders, elbows, wrists and vision show the signs of wear and tear, many of us can use all the help we can get! The cost is a little steep – about 3 float trip equivalents - but reports suggest that the class is very valuable.

• Mitchell Slough redux. In case you thought the controversy over Mitchell Slough ended when the Montana Supreme Court rendered its decision, think again! The latest wrinkle relates to some of the landowners establishing feeding stations for migratory waterfowl on their property in an effort to snark duck hunters from hunting the waterway. It is illegal to hunt birds in an area where they are being fed. Ducks are not dumb, so they will quickly recognize that this area not only provides provender but also a refuge from the pesky shotgunners. However, the issue is complicated since a number of houses are right on the banks and also because it would be trespassing to retrieve a bird that landed on the ground instead of in the water.

Stream access only permits recreationists to stay within the highwater marks of the channel. The landowners have petitioned Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks to close the stream to duck hunting on part of the slough. MFWP is exploring solutions to this issue and has scheduled a public hearing at the Bitterroot River Inn at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, December 9. Public comments will be accepted until Friday, December 11.

Here is a post dedicated to our neighbors, Big Blackfoot Chapter of Trout Unlimited in Missoula, Montana.

A message from our friend, Jerry O'Connell:

For the past 20 years, our Big Blackfoot Chapter Trout Unlimited (BBCTU) has done more watershed restoration and preservation than any other chapter in the US. It has gained national acclaim and recognition for the hundreds of miles of restored and protected tributaries of the Big Blackfoot River. Over the years, BBCTU has set the standard for designing, managing, and executing boots-and-shovels projects at the grass roots level.

BBCTU has done all of this without a single fundraising event. However, we feel it’s time to break that tradition as we celebrate these two decades of progress. Thus, we’ll be holding our 20th Anniversary Party on Saturday, September 12, 2009, complete with bus tours of some of our projects, cocktails, a pitchfork BBQ and an auction with some very unique items (need a steer?). It’ll be at the Rolling Stone Ranch in Ovando, right in the heart of the Blackfoot Valley.

Painted Rocks Reservoir in the Bitterroot Valley and How It Is Operated

Hello Everyone,
The DNRC has received several inquires lately concerning the outflows at Painted Rocks Reservoir and how the reservoir is operated. Therefore, the following email will provide a brief explanation of reservoir operations.

The operation of Painted Rocks Reservoir involves three main parties. The DNRC, the Painted Rocks Water Users Association (PRWUA), and the MT FWP. Painted Rocks Reservoir holds approximately 32,656 acre-feet (af) of water, with 25,000 af of that stored water marketed to the MT FWP and the PRWUA. Additionally, there is the Bitterroot River Water Commissioner who manages the river in a manner that insures the apportionment and diversion of decreed and contract waters.

The DNRC is owner of the dam and the reservoir area. It is our responsibility to insure that the reservoir is filled and operated safely and that water is available for delivery to the contract holders. Once the reservoir is full the amount of water that flows into the reservoir equals the reservoir outflows. The reservoir is held in this state of equilibrium until the contract water is requested. The DNRC is under contractual obligation to deliver the contract water a the dam to the contract holders when it is called for.

The 10,000 af (or 2/5ths) of shares that has been marketed to the PRWUA is primarily used for agriculture purposes. Releases to the PRWUA usually occurs in mid July, but it is delayed this year due to higher than normal flows on the East Fork and the Mainstem of the Bitterroot River.

The other 15,000 af (or 3/5ths) of shares has been marketed to the MT FWP for in-stream uses . The local FWP contact in the Bitterroot Valley is Chris Clancy at 363-7169. The FWP contract water is released for instream flows in the mainstem of the Bitterroot River, based upon the conditions at Bell Crossing. According to the FWP current guidelines, they determine their desired releases based upon a minimum targeted flow rate of approximately 450 cfs at the Bell Crossing gage. As of today the flow rate at the Bell Crossing gage is approximately 737 cfs. The current FWP guidelines do not discuss the release of water from the reservoir for the augmentation of flows in the West Fork of the Bitterroot River, only the mainstem of the Bitterroot River.
Recently inquires have been made to the DNRC about the following issues; low water levels effecting raft access to the river; low water levels effecting quality of fishing; low water levels effecting water temperatures; and bad access road into the shuttle parking area upstream of the USGS gage below the dam.

Low Water Levels
The low flow conditions in the West Fork of the Bitterroot River are simply a reflection of the low inflows into the reservoir. As inflows to the reservoir drop, the DNRC adjusts outflows to match. The DNRC is passing all of the inflows through the reservoir, either over the spillway or out of the low level outlet. Flows below the dam will raise, pending a call for contract water from either the PRWUA of the MT FWP. The DNRC has recently made several gate adjustments on July 23rd, 24th, and 28th in order to insure that the reservoir outflows matched the inflows. These adjustments are also needed in order to transition the flows from the spillway to the low level outlet in preparation for the anticipated contract water deliveries. An additional adjustment is anticipated on July 31st. Requests for the release of contract waters for in-stream purposes on the West Fork of the Bitterroot River should be directed to the FWP.

The dirt road that goes upstream past the USGS gage to the pioneer launch site below Painted Rocks Dam, is not a DNRC road and it is located on US Forest Service (USFS) property. Any concerns about this pioneer road, launch, and camping site should be directed to the USFS West Fork District Ranger Office.

4th Annual Bitterroot Floating Weed Pull - July 11, 9am-3pm

This event allows us to educate the public of the threats of noxious weeds, while they assist us in the removal of blueweed (a new invader) from the Bitterroot River. In the years past, Blueweed has not been found beyond Stevensville and we are working hard to completely eradicate this rapidly spreading weed from our county and stop it from spreading into neighboring counties. Every spring when the river rises, the seeds that were dropped from flowering plants the previous years are brought downstream by the water. Our goal each summer is to remove all flowering plants, so that no new seeds will be dropped.

I am writing to inform you of the event because in the past you have donated either prizes to give away or your time in helping with the event. We would very much appreciated anything that you could donate towards the event this year. Last year 60 volunteers showed up and we had over $2000 worth of prizes to give away. We hope to meet or possibly exceed these numbers this year.

Chris Clancy presented a dynamic slideshow about trout in the Bitterroot River. He shared stories, photos, fish counts and statistics, and graphs about brown, rainbow, cutthroat trout and more.

There were close to 25 people in attendance and the crowd was immersed in his talk and visual aids. Chris asked for questions, and there were some, but mostly he provided us all with current and facinating information about the state of trout and their habitat in the Bitterroot River and it's tributaries.

He also shared that Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (his office in the Bitterroot) and the Bitterroot National Forest Resource Staff have an especially effective relationship in monitoring and managing the health of the Bitterroot River, tributaries, and fishery. They share information, personnel, equipment and resources. This relationship and working with the University of Montana at Missoula and Montana State University at Bozeman allow better monitoring, information gathering and in depth studies to be accomplished. We are fortunate to have Chris and other biologists like him. Thank you all!

Letter From Trout Unlimited March 26, 2009 - Thank you for taking action

Yesterday marked a huge victory for Trout Unlimited and our conservation allies. The House of Representatives passed the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, a landmark public lands protection bill that would ensure access and opportunity for hunters and anglers today and for generations to come. Passage of this bill does more for hunting and fishing and outdoor recreation than any other measure in the last 15 years. By a landslide vote of 285-140, the House of Representatives moved this bill over the finish line. Now the bill will go to President Obama for his signature on Monday, March 30th.

This victory would not have been possible without your help. Your continued engagement and efforts to communicate this bill’s importance to your Members of Congress paid out huge dividends. We were able to get landslide votes in both chambers which shows the hard work and perseverance you gave over the last 18 months. We thank you.

Because of your help, we have successfully protected over 2 million acres of public lands. We have protected places like Copper-Salmon in Oregon, the Wyoming Range in Wyoming, the Wild Monongahela in West Virginia, the Owyhees in Idaho, the Eastern Sierras in California and so many other special places. We have also permanently protected the National Landscape Conservation System, a network of highly valuable public lands of acute interest to anglers and hunters. Included in that system is the famed Gunnison Gorge of Colorado, one of the best trophy trout fisheries in the West, and the Steens Mountain region, an irreplaceable hunting and fishing destination in eastern Oregon.

In addition to protecting public lands, this bill will enact the San Joaquin River Restoration Settlement, ending years of litigation, the Secure Water Act and the Cooperative Watershed Management Act. Both of the water bills will help to restore watersheds and provide the framework for working collaboratively with diverse partners to ensure adequate flows for viable fish populations across the country.

Many of the bills in the Omnibus have tremendous fish and wildlife conservation merit, have local community support –including ranchers and farmers who are partners in watershed groups – and have been developed in a bipartisan manner. Passage of the Omnibus, which includes nearly 160 bills, is truly historic and one that will be considered an outstanding achievement for generations to come.

Rivers included in the Big Sky Rivers Act: The Madison, main Flathead, Clark Fork, Bitterroot, Blackfoot, Smith, Jefferson, Upper Missouri, Upper Yellowstone and Gallatin.

Why support the Big Sky Rivers Act?
• It reduces costly flood and erosion damage by steering development away from known flood hazard areas;
• It protects private property rights by ensuring that actions of upstream landowners do not harm downstream landowners;
• It gives local governments control over the tools they need to manage their rivers;
• It protects water quality from stormwater runoff, lawn chemicals, and individual wastewater systems;
• It shields local governments from lawsuits brought by homeowners whose homes are damaged by flooding and erosion;
• It preserves critical fish and wildlife habitat by reducing the need for rip-rap and levees;
• It ensures high-quality recreational opportunities for anglers and boaters who value scenery and solitude;
• It includes a variance process to make sure no one loses the ability to build on an existing lot, and it includes a grandfather clause for existing homes.

Contact Members of the House and tell them this is a good bill. It protects private property as well as economic and recreational values all Montanans cherish.

What the Big Sky Rivers Act does NOT do:
• It does NOT take away the authority of local governments to create their own streamside development standards;
• It does NOT deprive riverfront landowners of the opportunity to build on their lots if their entire lot is located within a streamside management area;
• It does NOT apply within incorporated cities, towns or sanitary sewer districts;
• It does NOT prohibit property owners from rebuilding their home if it is destroyed by causes other than flooding;
• It does NOT grant public access to private property or expand the state’s stream access law.
• It does NOT affect agricultural-related buildings.

Bitterroot Trout Unlimited wants to make it easy for the public to know and follow the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Regulations for trout fishing (excerpted from FWP regs) as they can be different on various reaches. Violations are happening and trout are being harmed. We can help stop that.

We are calling for volunteers. On Saturday, March 21, we will team up and post regulation signs at as many river access points as needed - hopefully completing the project we started last year. We invite anyone who is interested to join us.

If you want to know what Bitterroot Trout Unlimited is doing to protect the Bitterroot River, get to know our members, and enjoy a morning near the river, come to one of two places at 9:00 am:

Safeway in Hamilton parking lot (southeast of Hwy 93 and Main Street streetlight/intersection)

the Stevensville Fishing Access Site (northeast side of the bridge)

BRTU members will be there to meet you, organizing the day's signing efforts.

The following materials will be provided though we would welcome donations of the same:

Metal fence posts and pounder (can always use another pounder)
Plywood (provided by BRTU and cut to fit the laminated signs)

Spring is just around the corner and the sight of trout eagerly rising to a dry fly won’t come too soon. We saw a few sporadic rises early in February but it’s still a sub-surface, bottom bouncing presentation that draws the most strikes at the moment.

We’re fortunate in the Bitterroot to have such a diverse bug population and even more privileged to have the Skwalla Stonefly to kick off our spring fishing. Before hitting the river most anglers wait for the bugs to surface, but if you’re really eager to get started I think you’ll be pleased with some nymph fishing until the fish start looking up, plus you’ll likely have your special spot all to yourself.

This basic pattern has worked well for me over the years and you can imitate any stonefly nymph by simply changing color and size. You may embellish it with soft hackle or rubber legs, a segmented thorax or a bead but it works quite well as shown. This pattern calls for dark olive but dark brown will likely work as well. I tie it weighted and add split shot when fishing. Work on getting a natural drift - it’s just as important when bouncing nymphs along the bottom as it is dead drifting a dry over risers.

Hook: Size 8 or 10 heavy wire 3XL nymph hook (Dai-Riki #710 e.g.)

Weight: 10 – 15 wraps of .025 diameter lead wire

Thread: 3/0 Dark olive Unithread

Tails: Black or dark brown goose biots, split

Abdomen: Dark olive Hare-Tron dubbing tightly wrapped in a dubbing loop

Ribbing: Black vinyl v-rib, medium

Wing case: Dark olive or dark brown Thin Skin

Thorax: Dark olive Hare-Tron dubbing picked out on sides & trimmed flat on bottom

Head: Tying thread

Rob Breeding is an outdoor writer who has worked for newspapers in Montana, Arizona, California and Idaho. He moved to Hamilton, Mont. in 1992, where he won his first Montana Newspaper Association Award for outdoor writing while working at the Ravalli Republic newspaper. After working in Arizona (where he edited the state's top outdoors section at the Arizona Daily Sun in Flagstaff) and Idaho, he returned to Montana in 2006. He has worked in journalism as a writer, editor and professor for more than 20 years. He teaches journalism at Flathead Valley Community College and previously taught at Northern Arizona and Idaho State universities.

November 20 TU Meeting to feature Future of Montana’s Rivers and Fish

The next general meeting of Bitter Root Trout Unlimited will be at 7:00 PM November 20, 2008. The program will be presented by Montana TU Executive Director Bruce Farling.

At the meeting, TU’s indefatigable state leader will give an overview of issues impacting rivers across the state. With a crashing economy and a new administration in the White House, Bruce will talk about what is likely to change and what might stay the same – or get worse. He will give an update on various projects and programs that TU is doing across the state, and also give a preview of some issues that might surface during the upcoming Montana legislature. Everyone seems to be saying that we are in a time of change, but experience tells us that change is not inevitably progress.

The meeting will begin at 7:00 PM at the Hamilton Elks Lodge, 203 State Street. The meeting is open to the public and there is no charge for admission.

Brief Chronology of Bitterroot Chapter of Trout Unlimited

1974 – Chapter chartered as Bitterroot Chapter of Trout Unlimited (BRTU), #080. Charter members included John Moreland, Steve Benedict, David Odell, Andy Carlson, Marshall Bloom.
Late 1970’s – BRTU, under leadership Chapter President Dave Odell, sponsored float trip with members of Bitterroot Conservation District (BCD) down Bitterroot to highlight dewatering of river’s midsection from Hamilton to Bell Crossing.
Painted Rocks Lake water –
In early 1980’s, BRTU , under leadership of BRTU Chapter President Marshall Bloom, worked with Pat Graham, MFWP staffer for Northwest Power Planning Council, to convince BPA to fund 2 year study of effect of supplementing instream flows during summer with 10,000 acre feet of water from Painted Rocks Lake.
Results were so compelling that MFWP agreed to lease water from Painted Rocks on an annual basis.
Throughout the 1980’s, under leadership of Chapter President Marshall Bloom BRTU worked with local legislators, local irrigators, BCD, Ravalli County Fish and Wildlife Association, and MFWP to create Bitterroot River Water Users Group and to establish long-term lease of 10, 000 acre-feet. Lease was underwritten by Montana Power Company (MPC) as off site mitigation for damage to fisheries incurred by projects downstream on Columbia River owned by MPC. This water was to be managed by MFWP on behalf of the Bitterroot’s sportsmen and supplemented 5,000 acre-feet purchased in perpetuity by Western Montana Fish and Game Association in 1959. Impact of these efforts cannot be overestimated.
In mid-late 1990’s, BRTU worked with Montana Water Project lawyers Laura Ziemer and Stan Bradshaw, to arrange more permanent acquisition of the water.
Mid-1980’s- BRTU funded studies of trout losses into ditches by Dr William Good. Studies were the first to demonstrate significant losses into Hedge Ditch and were published.
Mid-1980’s – BRTU was major force pushing for special regulations and special management sections on the Bitterroot River.
Mid-1980’s – BRTU convinced MFWP to institute Voluntary Catch and Release regulations for cutthroat. Popularity of voluntary program led to acceptance of mandatory C&R for cutthroat when proposed.
Mid-1980’s – BRTU was major commenter on the Forest Plan for the Bitterroot National Forest. Comments developed by David Carr, Marshall Bloom and Doris Milner.
Mid-Late 1980’s – BRTU, under leadership of Bill Good, carried out annual fall rescues of trout trapped in ditches and returned them to river.
Late 1980’s early 1990’s – BRTU was major force lobbying for full time MFWP biologist for the Bitterroot. Result was hiring of Chris Clancy.
Early 1990’s –BRTU was among first Montana TU chapters to support Arctic Grayling Recovery Program and has contributed annually to the program since its inception.
1990’s – BRTU held first Women’s Flyfishing Classes with Jennifer Olsson (ne Smith) as instructor. These efforts continue.
1990’s – BRTU established Bitterroot Buggers Club. Program continues.
Early 2000’s – BRTU, under leadership of former Pres Jack Mauer, conducted float trips to highlight extent and impact of stream stabilization projects. BRTU supported MFWP biologist Chris Clancy’s efforts to modify 310 enforcement and project requirements.
2002- BRTU was founding member of the Ravalli County Advisory Council, the first RAC to be chartered in Montana. Marshall Bloom served as the first Chairman of the RAC. BRTU continues to be RAC member, represented by Greg Chester.

Annual Banquet for BRTU, September 26, 2008

This is an invitation to attend the 29th annual Bitterroot Trout Unlimited Banquet. The banquet will start at 5:00 PM on Friday, September 26 at the Bitterroot River Inn in Hamilton. There will be a gourmet dinner prepared from local ingredients and catered by Riversong Catering. Silver Coin is in charge of the beverage table and we will again be featuring premium microbrews from Bitter Root Brewing! We will have special awards, drawings, door prizes, live and silent auctions. Premiums will include gourmet dinners, fine wines, elegant jewelry, fishing trips on the fabled Middle Fork of the Flathead, the Kootenai, the Madison, Big Hole and Bitterroot River, tackle, and artwork by local artists and craftspersons.

Here are a couple sneak previews! Tom Morgan of Tom Morgan Rodsmiths, also know as the “Rodfather”, is donating one of his exclusive new fiberglass rod blanks. We have also secured a stay in a flyfishing lodge in New Zealand. Other special items include #2 of the Monte Dolack print that our chapter commissioned last year, and a special outing to Lake Como with dinner for 8 at the Hikers Lodge.

Why should you come? Besides having a great time, swapping fishing stories, meeting people and visiting with your friends, here are just a couple of other reasons. We continue to work hard on the conservation and education side of things. Chapter representatives are deeply engaged in youth education, water quality monitoring, stream setback efforts, native trout restoration, habitat restoration, and a host of other issues designed to make sure that the quality of our streams and fisheries will be in good shape for future generations.

This banquet is our only fundraiser, and we are strictly a volunteer organization. Importantly, all of the money we raise stays in Montana, most of it here in the Bitterroot. Your support is what makes it happen! So, please plan on attending now.

The doors open at 5:00 PM, so there will be plenty of time to visit with friends, buy raffle tickets, view the items and bid on the silent auction. Dinner will be at 6:30 PM and will be followed by the live and silent auctions, door prize and other drawings.

Please remember that the last five years’ banquets were totally sold out at least a week before the event and seating will be limited, so reserve your tickets early.
